After my Mom (Joanne’s Godmother) passed a few years ago we reconnected and talked every couple of months. We had many heart-to-heart conversations about our families and life in general. It was also fun to reminisce about our childhood memories; we were so lucky to have such a large extended family. My love to Maureen, Tricia, Beth and Clare ~ Marie

Living with 4 sisters there were adventures and misadventures. We “borrowed” each other’s clothes including sweaters, dresses, socks, shoes and even panty hose. Whoever went out the door to school first, was the best dressed. Whoever got in the shower first, got all of the hot water. When we were little, there was always someone to play house, school, and hide and seek with. We played for hours with our beloved barbie dolls. We watched TV. On Saturday we watched cartoons and the Monkees. Joanne’s favorite Monkee was Peter Tork. She loved Dark Shadows. A soap opera story about witches, vampires and ghosts. I think she had a crush on Quentin Collins, the werewolf. Did we fight and tease each other? For sure. But when mum opened the door and we ran in search of our friends on the street, eventually we would hook up for a game of kick ball, red rover or a massive hide and seek with the whole neighborhood. I remember that one of Joanne’s favorite places to hide was in a snow fort we built. When mum called us in for supper, Joanne was nowhere to be found. Everyone was looking for Joanne. Finally, she was discovered sound asleep in the snow fort. After that, whenever she went missing, the fort was the first place we looked.
Reflecting on our amazing childhood, I am grateful for the life we shared. But kids grow up too fast and the bond between sisters changes and shifts. At 18, I entered the air force and that same year, dad was given an overseas position in Holland. We couldn’t have been more physically separated as my first duty station was in Japan.
Joanne’s travels in Europe with the family gave her a sense of wanderlust. When she got home from Holland, she got on a plane and flew halfway around the world to visit me in northern Japan.
Joanne married the love of her life, Mike with whom she raised 2 boys. Mike was in the Air Force and his duties took the young family to Germany, Tampa, Biloxi and Oklahoma.
When her son, Michael, was born in Germany, I returned the favor of her visit to Japan, by travelling to Germany to meet my new nephew. When Mike and I got to the hospital, we saw Joanne pushing the bassinet in the hall. I hurried to see her and the baby but I as I was closing in on them, the nurses started yelling and flailing their arms. I can’t remember exactly what they were saying, but it was along the lines “stay away from the baby.” Well Joanne and I went into hysterics; we didn’t understand the nurses’ reaction. Talk about ruining a moment!
Joanne was multi-talented. She spent long hours tending to her gardens and crafting. She could pin, tuck, knit and purl turning out amazing items that she often gave as gifts. Several years ago, a Christmas tradition was born around snowflakes. Snowflake pins, pendants and ornaments were exchanged. My parents constantly reminded us that we were unique like snowflakes. One year, Joanne’s delicate hands crocheted beautiful and individually designed snowflakes. I’m holding it in my hand as I write this.

What beautiful memories Maureen! I loved going to my cousins’ house in Needham! I loved playing with the kids kitchen in the garage! I’ll always remember Joanne’s infectious laugh! God Bless her! Love to all my Demiglio cousins!

I first met my loving cousin Joanne at my family home in Weybridge England in 1974 when Betty my cousin and husband Frank bought the girls over from Holland. They were all living there at that time though Franks work. What a brilliant time we all had,and still all fresh in my mind. Jo followed that up in 1975 by living at my parents home while going to school in London. We became very close and never lost that, even from across the pond. We met up again when Jo and Mike came to Weybridge for a vacation. We had a brill time. I can't believe we we never see each other again. The last email I received from Jo 2916 finished with Jo saying ,I know our paths will cross again. But sadly it wasn't to be. Jo you will always be inside my heart til the day I am no longer on this earth and forever after that. Sleep well my beautiful cousin and I will see you when I join you. Your very loving and very, very sad cousin Pat from over the water. xxx❤

To Mike, Sean and family:
Joanne was a tireless fighter on behalf of children’s’ rights. Her love of her sons and grandchildren was what kept her going.
Charlie and Travis were the absolute joy of her life and it was so heartwarming to hear her tell me about what a wonderful day Christmas was for her. Seeing her grandson’s faces light up when they got their gifts was priceless to her.
Joanne was warm, funny, insightful and most of all, courageous. I know that she recently signed up to be a volunteer at the Hampshire county courthouse to be a court appointed special advocate for children. Joanne felt strongly that children deserved to have someone advocate for their best interests. We were going to attend a training session together in the next few weeks.
I know that we will miss her deeply every day and will never forget this loving and courageous woman. She has inspired us tremendously.
Sincerely,
Charlene Galica, Ann Davidson and Debra Cohen

To Mike, Sean and family,
Charlene has expressed very well how much we will miss Joanne. I’ll add a brief story about an event that I’ll always remember. On July 23, 2019, our support group of Massachusetts grandparents attended a hearing at the State House to testify on a Bill being heard by the Committee on the Judiciary. We were new at activism and it was intimidating to be in a packed hearing room, but I feel we were buoyed up by Joanne’s strong sense of purpose. Ann Davidson

My heartfelt condolences to Joanne's family. I am so sorry to hear of her passing. I know that her family came first and that her grandchildren (each and every one of them) were always very special to her. I hope that God will grant each of you the strength you need at this difficult time and that the grandchildren whom she loved so dearly will never forget that her love for them was eternal.
A friend . . . Maureen Martowska, Lakeville, MA
