June Henneman

Obituary of June Henneman

Belchertown - June Sanford Henneman, 103 and Golden Cane recipient as the oldest resident of Belchertown, passed away at home on November 1, 2021. Born June 26, 1918, in Plainfield, MA, June was the daughter of Charles and Ellen (Deplidge) Sanford.

June had lived in Belchertown since the age of 5. She graduated from Belchertown High School in 1935, Northampton Commercial College in 1937, and earned an Associate Degree from Holyoke Community College in 1994 at the age of 75.

June was very active in the community. She was highly involved in the Belchertown Historical Association. As a member of the Belchertown United Church of Christ (BUCC) for over 80 years she served in many ways, from the Women’s Guild to secretary to the minister. She originated and organized the first craft fairs on the common. She received the Belchertown Citizen of the Year in 2003. Her commitment to others extended to her 30-plus years of volunteering well into her 90’s at Mary Lane Hospital as well as being a host family for many years for foreign exchange students and teachers. She enjoyed recreation with the Belchertown Women’s Bowling League, Hickory Ridge Country Club, and, since 1962, as member of the Wickaboag Boat Club in W. Brookfield. To say she was an avid UMass sports enthusiast would be an understatement. Her mind was sharp with her love of reading and writing, staying active in her daily life with family outings.

June was predeceased by her husband, Arthur F. Henneman in 1987, and will be greatly missed by her three children: Linda Snow and her husband Kenneth, Marnie Henneman, and Kenneth Henneman and his wife Kathy, as well as being a “host mother” to Bob Baafi of Ghana. June’s memory will be treasured by her six grandchildren: Keiler Snow and husband Sean McGeary, Michelle Greene and husband Craig, Christopher Snow, Kimberly Curtin and husband Michael, Brian Campbell, and Katie Henneman, as well as her great-grandchildren Owen, Greyson, and Jacob McGeary, Austen Greene, and Olivia Snow. Besides her husband she was predeceased by her brother, Harry Sanford, and her great-grandson, Jackson Greene. The family especially wishes to thank Katie, Cherie, and Cheryl for their care and attention to her during the past few months and to Hospice for support the past two weeks.

Visitation will be Saturday, November 20, at 10:00 with a service to begin at 11:00, both at the Belchertown United Church of Christ, Park Street, Belchertown, MA. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to BUCC, PO Box 603, Belchertown, MA 01007 or the Belchertown Historical Society, PO Box1211, Belchertown, MA 01007.
